Facebook today announced that a prototype version of OpenXRthe royalty-free open standard from The Khronos Group, will be available to Oculus Quest and Rift developers in an update coming later this month.
Now we just need Valve to also release their finalized OpenXR tools to developers. Interested to hear what donated Oculus software you are referring to?

I believe the reasoning it was chosen over others was because the Oculus software is coded for both PC and mobile android. I really do believe that open frameworks and standards drive progress and end user choice.
Less friction for devs means more distribution at lower dev costs. This is for making development of games easier. They can still lock everything like before. This is better than nothing. There is nothing in the OpenXR specification to prevent content lock-in.
OpenXR solves an efficiency problem facing developers, not the fractured ecosystem problem facing consumers. That said, consumers may benefit in a trickle-down manner since it becomes a bit easier for devs to support multiple platforms — if they choose… or are allowed….

Hardware Reviews.Today's Oculus Connect 6 keynote was jam-packed with major new features for the Quest: Oculus Link will let it connect to PCs and play any Rift title; hand-tracking is coming next year ; and it's even getting Go apps and better passthrough support. Not much, I'd say. The Rift S had a rocky start. It launched alongside the Quest, but while that headset gave us a glimpse at the power of truly portable VR, the Rift S just felt like a minor step up from the original Rift.Building collapse in delhi today
Sure, the resolution was higher and had built-in sensors, but it wasn't the true sequel I was hoping for. Instead, it felt like yet another PC VR headset, one that was practically indistinguishable from the slew of Windows Mixed Reality devices.
With Oculus Link and all of those updates coming to the Quest, the Rift S now seems practically irrelevant. My main issue with the Quest originally was that it was limited to simpler mobile VR experiences, but Oculus Link completely fixes that problem. If it works as advertised, you just have to plug it into a gaming PC to play higher quality Rift titles, like the upcoming Asgard's Wrath. That's not only incredibly convenient, it's something we haven't yet seen from a major VR company.
Finally, there's a headset that you can use wirelessly on the go, and together with a PC when you need more power. The Rift S does have the advantage of a slightly faster 80Hz refresh rate, but the Quest isn't much slower at 72Hz. I'd argue the benefits of OLED outweigh that deficiency: You'll see deeper black levels and better overall contrast on the Quest.
And if you're not sold on the benefits of the Quest yet, there's also hand tracking coming next year. We only saw a brief demo at Oculus Connect, but it looks like it does a decent job of sensing your individual finger movements using the Quest's built-in cameras and computer vision algorithms. There's no additional accessory required.
It's unclear if the Rift S will ever get this feature — though it technically could. While hand tracking might not replace the Quest's motion controllers altogether, it adds another immersive interaction option for developers.
It also gives Oculus one way to compete with the Valve Indexwhich has excellent finger tracking controllers.
It gives you a stereoscopic view of the real world using the headset's cameras, and it's vastly superior to the flat 2D version of Passthrough currently on the Quest. This isn't necessarily an essential feature, but being able to sense the actual distance between you and your coffee table will likely help avoid potential VR accidents.
I wouldn't be surprised if Oculus ends up making the Rift S cheaper for the holidays, but it would have to be a truly steep discount to make it worthwhile. Follow all the latest news from Oculus Connect 6 here!

In certain applications it was close to Rift quality or better due to the higher res screen. If the cable is on par or better than streaming it will be a nice alternative to the Rift S for sure. How much super sampling did you use for CV1 in your comparison?

I don't know how Link will compare, but it's likely to be similar--I believe that they've said that it will use a render resolution similar to the Rift S.

Oculus announced last month that Quest will soon be able to play Oculus games on PC via a new feature called Oculus Link. Though Oculus Link will immediately add big boost in value to existing Quest headsets, perhaps even more interesting is what this announcement tells us about next-gen Oculus headsets.Android tethering port forwarding
Oculus Link is set to launch in beta as a free update to Quest headsets in November. And while the added benefit of Oculus Link may even call into question the value of Rift S over Questthe move tells us some very interesting things about the future of Oculus headsets.
First and foremost, Oculus Link gives us good reason to expect that all future Quest headsets will also be compatible with PC content, and may even have some dedicated hardware to make the job easier. In that regard, the release of Oculus Link can be seen as a commitment from Oculus that its future high-end standalone headset will continue to be able to play both mobile and PC titles.
If we are working under the assumption that Quest and its successors will be compatible with PC content from this point forward, it clearly opens the door for Oculus to make its PC product more clearly positioned for the high-end crowd. Oculus Qrift? My thinking is probably not…. Of course there would still be bandwidth and wireless reliability issues to contend with. One way or another, Oculus is moving into some uncharted territory as it turns Quest into a hybrid headset that can access both its mobile and PC libraries.
Oculus is clearly trying to make its content and ecosystem more cohesive, and this will very likely guide decisions being made about Quest 2 and Rift 2. Excited to see wireless streaming sometime in the future.All frp tool
An ecosystem supporting that, rather than a single company with a license, would be amazing. Even the 5Ghz seems unlikely to work at the 2k resolutions. I think most of us are waiting to see the long term health effects from those who are more daring. The future of VR is going to likely involve a wire.
The optimal device in a wired future is a headset that can be wired to a mobile device, like a cellphone, as well as the home PC. This is what the Cosmos and Quest were originally heading for.
For the Quest Link to work, the signal has to be compressed. Press members that have seen it all say it has a slight but noticeable effect on the picture quality. I thought this was a great idea too, until I had some time using it. It might actually be more uncomfortable then the original VIVE. Thankfully, they were generous and refunded that time. Just like with a console centric approach.
